The SoG game system _ Dice and Attributes

Hey folks,

Today I’d like to give you a brief insight into the basic gameplay of Shards of Gods. In the future, you will of course be provided with more information, and we will talk about topics such as character abilities, items and our special “Evolving Items”, enemies, boss battles and much more!

But for now, let’s get back to basics. Shards of Gods is played with a set of dice, the most important of which is a D20, a twenty-sided die.

Every character/creature in the game has the same set of attributes, each of which can have a value between 1 and 20. If you want to perform a challenging action in the game, the D20 is rolled to determine whether this action is successful. The player is told which attribute is used for the action. For example, if the player wants to move a heavy cupboard, they will probably want to use the attribute “Physical Strength.”

The attribute to be used is often predetermined, but not always. One of our special features are the “free to choose” skill-checks, which allow the players to decide for themselves which attribute they want to use. For example, if they don’t want to move the cupboard by brute force but would like to knock it over in order to make space, they could decide to use their “Dexterity” attribute for this action instead. Or if they want to intimidate someone by using their physical appearance instead of a verbal threat, they are free to choose another attribute than Charisma. Of course, the attribute must always fit the situation in some way 😊

If you roll a result that is equal to or lower than the attribute used, the action was successful. The higher your own attribute, the higher the chances of success, whereby a 20 always means failure and a 1 always means success.

Example:

A cupboard is to be moved and the character uses Physical Strength, for which he has a value of 15. He uses the D20 and rolls a result of 12. The value of 12 is below his Physical Strength of 15, which is why the action succeeds and he can move the cupboard successfully.

Each character in the game has the following attributes:

  • Charisma
  • Perception
  • Intelligence
  • Knowledge
  • Willpower
  • Dexterity
  • Constitution
  • Physical strength

I hope I’ve been able to give you an idea of the basics of the game and look forward to telling you more soon 😊

Until then!

Fabian
