One of the questions we asked ourselves early during development was:

What should power feel like for characters?

In Shards of Gods, the answer became the Shardbound System:
a way to make power personal, reactive, and deeply connected to story rather than numbers alone. This system is one of the core gameplay pillars of Shards of Gods, designed to tie character progression directly to story, choices, and consequence.

What Does “Shardbound” Mean?

Throughout the world of Elun, fragments of fallen gods, known as Shards, linger as echoes of divine power. When a character comes into contact with such a shard under the right (or wrong) circumstances, something remarkable can happen:

They become Shardbound.

A Shardbound character forms a living connection to a so-called Powershard. While by no means as powerful as a true, sentient Godshard or the god they originated from, this connection is still powerful, tempting, and dangerous.

It grows stronger the more it is used. But power always comes at a price.

Shardbound powers:

• Grow over time, unlocking new effects over the course of your story
• Respond to player behavior, not just level ups
• May change how the world reacts to your character
• Can grow unstable if abused, or neglected

Your shard remembers how you use it and it will change you in return.

A Blessing… or a Slow Descent?

Being Shardbound does not make you a hero by default.

Some societies and cultures revere the Shardbound as chosen champions.
Others fear them as walking catastrophes.

As your bond grows stronger, so do the questions:

• How much of this power is truly yours?
• What happens when the shard wants something in return?
• And how far are you willing to go to keep control?

This is just one of our core systems shaping Shards of Gods, and we can’t wait to show you more.
